BOFRA Safety Rules & Requirements
Some of the races organised and run by BOFRA are insured through the Fell Runners Association. Therefore to
ensure the organisation is covered by this insurance it must comply with the safety requirements of the FRA.
BOFRA safety requirements reflect “best practice” as determined by the Fell Runners Association. To view the full document published by the FRA please click on
FRA Safety Requirements for Fell Races
You
- are responsible for your own safety on the fells.
- must wear your vest throughout the whole of your race.
- must comply with the requirements of the race organiser.
- must read the “disclaimer” on the entry form and understand it before you sign.
- must not register, decide not to run and go home without telling the organiser.
- must not go through the finish funnel twice (or not at all).
- must not drop out and then fail to go back directly to the finish to report to the organiser.
- MUST stop and help if you see someone in distress – it’s only a fell race, not life and death, but could be someone else’s.
- must do what the Race Organiser asks. It is their race. They are always right and sorry I didn’t know… is not an excuse.
- should take the full kit to every race because only the race organiser will know what needs to be carried on the day.
Kit Requirements
Kit is not carried to slow you down, it is carried to combat the weather when running, but more importantly it is for when you stop, tired, lost,
or maybe injured; and the body starts cooling on the way to hypothermia… and possibly death.
The Standard Equipment list is to ensure the safety of the runner in the event of poor weather or an incident.
The BOFRA committee has defined the standard equipment for both Senior and Junior Races.
This allows the Race Organiser more freedom in relaxing these requirements on race day.
The Standard Equipment for BOFRA Senior races is:-
- Wind and waterproof top including hood (sold as waterproof with taped seams).
- Wind and waterproof trousers (sold as waterproof with taped seams).
- Hat and Gloves.
- Map, of the race route and surrounding area.
- Compass suitable for navigating the course.
- Whistle.
The Standard Equipment for BOFRA Junior races is:-
- Wind and waterproof top including hood (sold as waterproof with taped seams).
- Wind and waterproof trousers (sold as waterproof with taped seams).
- Hat and Gloves.
- Whistle.
The Standard Equipment is MANDATORY for all BOFRA races, UNLESS the Race Organiser relaxes some of the requirements on the day. No Kit, No Run.
Numbers
- Must be worn to be seen, by marshals and anyone else (Landowner, Spectator).
- Must be worn on the chest, not on your shorts or bumbags.
- The full number must be displayed and not be cut down or folded down.
Footwear
Only runners wearing trainers with cleated soles or studs or heavy waffle soles, will be allowed to run.
NO trainers with smooth soles will be permitted.
