Member Profiles - Trevor Metcalfe

Name: Trevor Metcalfe

Club: Wharfedale Harriers

Where are you from?: Hellifield, North Yorks

Age: 60

Occupation: Retired (although the wife says not)

How long have you been running?: approx 29 years

How long have you been fell running?: about the same

Why fell running?: Love the adrenaline buzz and a great stress buster. Love the scenery (if you've time to admire it whilst watching your feet and wiping the sweat from your face and trying to shut out the pain). Love the crack with friends after races - when the going gets tough, the tough get going. Great sense of achievement beating people.

Favourite Race(s) why?: Sedbergh - usually the first championship race, where you want to do well and make your mark. The climb is the one that creates the challenge. The steep ascent is a buzz. Also the White Lion, with a fast descent where you can open up.

Greatest achievements (or disasters!): 13th at Grasmere in 1989 (prizes down to 12th place). A place in the England v Scotland team 1992 at innerleithen. Kendal Winter League V40 champion 1991 and 1992.

Do you follow a training programme?: Not at present, making a comeback after injury

What is your weekly mileage?: Not interested in mileage (quantity), more interested in building strength and stamina / confidence (quality time)

Who is your sporting hero / villain!: Norman Hunter - The mighty Leeds. ("Norman bites your legs")

Favourite food: Enjoy and Indian - Hot and Spicy

Favourite drink: Beer and Whiskey (not necessarily in that order)

Favourite shoes: Inov8s. Just bought a brand new pair - excellent grip

Favourite piece of running kit: The dry / warm type

Favourite music / band: Most 6o's music. Queen / Status Quo / Elvis. Also some modern rock / pop etc

Favourite movie / TV programme: Bond films, Dambusters, Bridge over the river Kwai, war films, 39 Steps (showing my age).

Do you have any other hobbies?: Annoying the wife, walking and photography

Give us an interesting fact / something we wouldn't know about you!: I like karaoke and can sing a bit too! (Elvis - "in the ghetto" / "always on my mind")

Complete the sentence: If I wasn't fell running I would be... ...nasty, grumpy and bad tempered. "Nothing new there" the wife says..

Complete the sentence: I have never... ...lost my drive and passion for the love of this great sport, even at 60. When everything cracks and creaks, I think of the great thrills and achievements I have had, the places I have been; the camaraderie and friendships.

Anything else you want to add?: Hope I have given you enough info...you can start yawning now zzzzzz. I could write an essay.
