Race Report

A small corner of the Yorkshire Dales played host to a battle of some fellrunning greats on Sunday. After a dull and misty start to the day, the sun came out and warmed both the fell and the runners as they limbered up for this year’s BOFRA Hawkswick Dash race. As the name implies, the race commences with a dash from the start field and across the bridge before commencing a seemingly endless drag up a track. Then it is a sharp right turn to a steep, hand over fist climb to Hawkswick Moor. Runners are then treated to a skyline run across tussocky heather before another sharp right turn to the steep descent and dash back across the bridge to the finish funnel.

The fast and furious battle of the giants was finally settled as Mercia’s Simon Bailey won in 11.23, Barlick FR’s Jimmy Craig was 2nd (12.05) and Borrowdale’s Morgan Donnelly 3rd (12.07). 2015 BOFRA champ, Ted Mason was knocked back to 4th place.

The ladies podium was no less impressive as Wharfedale Harriers’ Kirsty Hall won the ladies race (15.14), Ripon Runners’ Sally Houghton was 2nd (16.14) and Wharfedale team mate Jean Powell was 3rd (16.50).

The U17 race follows the same course as the seniors allowing for some interesting lads and dads comparisons.

It was a Wharfedale 1, 2 as Adam Gibson won the race (13.40) followed by Logan Hargreaves-Madhas (13.58). 3rd boy was Keighley and Craven’s Jack Walton (14.38). All 3 were faster than their respective dads! First girl was Clayton le Moors Briony Holt (15.38) continuing her flying form this season. 2nd and 3rd girls were Settle Harriers’ Emily Carpenter (21.28) and Keighley and Craven’s Alana Willis (28.22).

The U14 race was won by Settle’s Thomas Marshall, with Wharfedale team mates and brothers Alex and Will Thompson 2nd and 3rd respectively. The girls’ race was won by Wharfedale’s Alice Jones with Rossendale Harriers’ Lauryn Gregg 2nd and Helm Hill’s Annabelle Taylor 3rd.

The U12 race winner was Helm Hills’ Henry Hunter, continuing his fine form this season. 2nd and 3rd boys were Clayton le Moors Dexta Thompson and Calder Valley’s James Duffy. 1st girl was Clayton’s Ella Dorrington, followed by Broughton Runners’ Emily Swarbrick 2nd and Keighley and Craven’s Beth Roberts, 3rd.

In a break with recent tradition the U9 returned to the fell this year, rather than a romp around the hilly fields. All runners rose to the new challenge and the race was won by a speedy Jacob Reeday of Barlick FR. 2nd and 3rd boys were Campbell Donnelly and Keighley and Craven’s James Sadler-Townsend. 1st girl was Keighley and Craven’s Millie Timbers, followed by Barlick’s Lucille Pickles, 2nd and Keighley and Craven’s Layla Kirkley, 3rd.
