Race Report

Wharfedale Harriers' Ted Mason secured himself another entry on the Kirkby Gala Fell Race winners' board on Saturday. On a mild, warm but cloudy day, Ted led a field of 42 runners out of the Beckside Gala field and over the fell to secure another clear win. The ground was predictably firm following weeks of dry weather, making this a "runnable" and fast race to the finish. Second man was John Atkinson of Ambleside, and also first local home. Wharfedale Harriers' Jack Smith was 3rd man to finish.

First lady home, over this 4.3-mile fell course, was Helm Hill's Evelyn Dugdale, ensuring her entry on the Ladies section of the winners' board. Ruth Hetherington of Border Harriers was 2nd and Wharfedale Harriers' Lyn Whittaker was 3rd lady home.

In the U17 race Wharfedale Harriers' Thomas Nelson scored another victory as he sped home in first place. He was followed by Mercia's Billy Starling in 2nd position and Helm Hill's Jacob Aubrey in 3rd place. It was a good day for Helm Hill U17 girls as all 3 top positions were taken by Helm Hill club mates. First was Katherine Lawson, 2nd was Mia Senior and 3rd girl home was Georgia Stevens.

The U14 race saw Hyndburn's Joshua Boyle achieve another win with Ilkley Harriers' Euan Brennan hot on his heels in 2nd place and Helm Hill's Robert Askew in 3rd place. 1st U14 girl was Clayton-le-Moors Briony Holt followed by Mia Walsh and Imogen Burrow, both of Helm Hill, in 2nd and 3rd places.

1st U12 boy was Broughton Runners' Ben Edmondson, followed by 2 Wharfedale Harriers'; Jack Muir and William Thompson in 2nd and 3rd positions. The 1st 2 girls were Wharfedale Harriers' Charlotte Barrett and Alice Jones, with Lauryn Gregg of Rossendale Harriers in 3rd place.

U9 race winner and 1st girl was Olesia Winder. 2nd girl was Blackburn Harriers Alayna Irvine and 3rd girl was Olivia Swarbrick of Broughton Runners. 1st boy was again Allithwaite's Evan Allan, followed by Luke Forshaw in 2nd and Isaac Barber in 3rd place.
